Speculation has surrounded Sir Lewis Hamilton's Formula 1 future since his loss at the hands of Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi, but will he leave the sport before the start of the 2022 season?

Hamilton ended the year by losing out on a record eighth world championship after a controversial decision by Race Director Michael Masi to allow certain lapped cars past himself.

This resulted in one lap of racing where Verstappen utilised fresher tyres to snatch the race win and the world championship from the Briton's hands.

After this, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff said that the seven-time world champion had become disillusioned with the sport whilst Hamilton's own social media silence added to the speculation that he was set to quit the sport.

However, is it likely that the 37-year-old will abandon a two-year contract extension he signed in Austria? Although opinions are split, it is unlikely that Hamilton will leave the sport.

Not only would this leave his team scrambling to find a replacement, but it would also mean that he would miss out on the chance to make history by beating Michael Schumacher's record of seven world championships.

As well as this, the new regulations being brought to the sport opens up a new challenge for him to overcome; something that Hamilton has enjoyed in the past.

Stranger things have happened in Formula 1's illustrious history, however, and there is a chance we could lose the most successful driver on the current grid before the season even gets underway.
