Hitech Grand Prix’s Juri Vips will start Sunday’s FIA Formula 2 feature race from pole after today’s qualifying session. Jake Hughes will start from reverse pole for Van Amersfoort Racing for tomorrow’s sprint race. A crash for DAMS’ Ayumu Iwasa saw a late mad dash for the eventual pole.

Vips time of a 1:53.762s was over a tenth and a half faster than Carlin’s Liam Lawson and over two tenths than PREMA’s Dennis Hauger - who at the time of writing was under investigation.

Iwasa had led most of the session after a stunning first sector on his first push lap put him ahead of the rest of the pack.

Unfortunately for Iwasa with six minutes on the clock, he began a push lap and took too much speed into turn four, hitting his front right wheel off the barrier, ending his session and bringing out the red flag.

As the session restarted a mad dash for pole began with Trident’s Richard Verschoor briefly taking pole before Vips pipped the Dutchman.

Vips, who won both races in Baku last season takes pole, Lawson second and Hauger third. Vips’ teammate Marcus Armstrong is fourth while championship leader Felipe Drugovich is fifth ahead of Verschoor. Lawson’s teammate Logan Sargeant managed seventh while PREMA’s Jehan Daruvala, ART Grand Prix’s Frederik Vesti and and Hughes take eight, ninth and tenth.

Second place championship man Theo Pourchaire could only manage twelfth for ART.

The sprint race takes place tomorrow at 10:15.
