Clapham North MOT’s George Grant continued his incredible form in the Mazda MX-5 SuperCup at Donington Park, making countless overtakes to secure a trio of podium finishes.
Coming off the back of a stunning performance at Cadwell Park, where Grant took victory in all three races, the Kingston-upon-Thames driver was looking for more of the same at the Leicestershire circuit.
However, an electrical issue during qualifying meant Grant would start from the back of the grid in the #69 Rob Boston Racing entry. Determined not to give up, he went on a charge through the field in Races 1 and 2, picking up 17 positions in both to secure two second-placed results in the Masters’ class. This included a photo finish in Race 2 which saw him miss out on class victory by 0.001 of a second.
Grant rounded off his excellent weekend in the Mazda MX-5 Mk.3 by taking a third runner-up finish in the category, despite the race being shortened to just five minutes. This strong performance means that just one point separates Grant from championship leader Nick Rutter heading into the final round at Silverstone on 7-8 October.
Additionally, Grant competed in the Downforce Radio-supported Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship, displaying strong pace in both races to claim two top-ten finishes in class.
George Grant: “It’s been another brilliant weekend and I’m absolutely delighted with the pace and results throughout the event. Despite the issue in qualifying, the car was incredible and I was able to charge through the field. I was setting lap times quicker than ever before, the team did an amazing job and we showcased not just our competitive spirit but also the determination and skill we bring to the track. Donington Park is a circuit I love and I felt very comfortable in the car, as shown by the 52 overtakes across both the Mazda MX-5 SuperCup and Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship! The SuperCup title race between myself and Nick is unbelievably close, and I’m really excited to get to Silverstone in October and battle it out for the crown!”
