RACING VOICE: Why Jesse Phillips can win the British Kart Championship in IAME Cadet

June 17, 2021

At 9 years old, Jesse Phillips has had a roller-coaster ride to the top of British karting at an incredibly rapid rate. Considering that he is still only 9 he has taken multiple Bambino titles in karting - including the British and Bambino Kart Club crowns - and his rise to glory in IAME Cadet is already gathering rapid pace under the instruction of Formula E race winner Oliver Rowland.

Jesse has already had a busy season. He began his year in the United Arab Emirates where he raced overseas in the IAME UAE Series for the first time, and was challenging for the win first time out at RAK Track in Ras-Al-Khaimah and even on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi in Rotax UAE! He then made his way to Europe for the IAME Euro Series, racing at the Winter Cup in Valencia.

He's since been fighting for honours in the 2021 campaign at Mariembourg in Belgium and at Zuera in Spain, and the lessons he's been learning have dramatically shown him how to succeed in the top flight. After a tough start at Shenington where he finished outside the top 20 in his first round of the year and against many competitors in their second or third season in the class, he transformed that in spectacular style with a phenomenal second place finish last weekend at Kimbolton. Now the eyes are on him to translate that into a national title.

"We've had a crazy start to the year," Jesse tells us. "I took my first ever European pole at Mariembourg and then had a weird set of heats with top ten finishes and a tough final heat that dropped me back down the order. Then we fought back to finish P5 in the final! There were a lot of positives to take from the weekend and a lot of fun!

"Kimbolton has been so special to me, and I won't forget it for a while," he confesses. "We had such a good weekend, great times in practice, consistent top ten results and an awesome final where I worked through the whole race with my team-mate Lewis Wherrell and finished in second behind Zac Drummond. Honestly, I couldn't be happier!"

With dropped scores in the British Kart Championships, Jesse can now put the troubles at the season opener at Shenington behind him and challenge for victory in the remaining rounds of the 2021 season. This means that Jesse can literally jump from midfielder to championship contender in one meeting!

"Now I've got my sights set on the LGM Series at Warden Law this weekend, and I can't wait. I'm so grateful to my team at ORM and my mechanic Jake Dalton. Everyone gives me so much support, which allows me to do what I love every weekend!"

With no rush or hurry to get the job done, the fact that Jesse is already a challenger to drivers a few years older at the front of one of British motorsport's most competitive fields means the future is certainly rosy for this incredible young talent. And there's still a lot of races to win and a few more years before Formula One comes calling.....
