Charouz Racing System have signed Turkish driver Cem Bolukbasi for this season in FIA Formula 2. The 23 year old has history in sim racing, and will debut in the series having tested with Van Amersfoort Racing in the Abu Dhabi end of season test.

Bolukbasi joins Charouz on the back of a season in the Euroformula Open Championship, in which he finished fifth in the standings, taking two wins, eight podiums, one pole and one fastest lap.

The Turkish racer made his name racing in eSports, racing with Toro Rosso in the 2017 F1 eSports Series. He finished the season fifth overall and continued to race in the series through 2018 and 2019, making sparse appearances. He also competed in and won the inaugural Formula Renault Esports Series in 2020.

Since then, he has competed in GT4 cars, as well as in Formula Renault Eurocup and the 2021 Asian F3 series, finishing ninth overall in a grid containing 2021 F2 drivers Jehan Daruvala, Roy Nissany and Guanyu Zhou, who has now moved to Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo.

His move to F2 comes on the back of two prior tests in F2 machinery, having tested an old GP2 car in October before taking part in 2021’s end of season test in Abu Dhabi.

He is expected to line up next to Brazilian driver Enzo Fittipaldi with the Czech team this year.

“We’re more than delighted to welcome a brilliant driver like Cem in our F2 team,” Charouz team owner Antonin Charouz said.

Announced in a press conference, Bolukbasi said; “I also can’t wait to start working with the team, the season ahead is gonna be very long and demanding and establishing the best possible relationship with all the guys is going to be crucial for the final outcome.”
