Fernando Alonso will race with Aston Martin from 2023 after the British team announced the veteran Spanish driver will join the team to replace retiring Sebastian Vettel.
The team have confirmed the 2 time world champion on a 'multi year deal' and will likely line up next to Lance Stroll who is yet to be confirmed for 2023 but given the fact his father Lawrence is the team owner, the Canadian is likely to continue.
The move is something of a shock not only because Alonso's name was not one of those touted for the seat but because he was believed to be continuing with the Alpine project he returned to F1 for.
Alonso's departure from the French team is likely to mean 2021 Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri will be announced by the French team for 2023; the Australian is the Alpine reserve and test driver this year.
Nico Hulkenberg, Nyck De Vries and Mick Schumacher were among the drivers linked with the seat, but may now search for opportunities elsewhere on the grid or out with F1.
